It's been wild

Miller Fisher Variant Guillain-Barre Syndrome. That's what I got on 11 April 2012, exactly two months ago today. In a matter of a couple hours, I developed acute double vision and lost my balance and the ability to walk properly over the next couple days. My eyes were extremely sensitive to light and I was easily nauseated. This is what happened.

Wednesday, April 11: Went to the Student Health Center and met with a general doctor.
Thursday, April 12: Saw an ophthalmologist.
Friday, April 13: Went to a medical imaging center to get an MRI done.
Saturday and Sunday: Did nothing. Laid around with eyes covered listening to music for 48 hours.
Monday, April 16: MRI came out clean. No tumor/palsy/aneurysm/any other life changing condition. Saw ophthalmologist again.
Tuesday, April 17: Was referred to an eye alignment specialist. Noticed me stumbling. Spent the next two hours calling neurologists around the state. Admitted into hospital for Guillain-Barre Syndrome.
Tuesday - Saturday: Bedridden in the hospital. One spinal tap. Blood sugar and vitals taken every 4 hours. 4 hour dosage of IVIg every night through catheter in left arm. Lovenox (a blood thinning medication, and also the most painful thing to have ever been injected in me) administered every night. Daily therapy sessions with physical and occupational therapists. Also watched all three seasons of Parks and Recreation available on Netflix. It took so long because I could only watch about half an episode before having to take a break for my eyes.

Since the whole thing happened, I've had to miss the following:
  • The Shins concert in Vegas with some of my best friends. I was extremely upset about this because it was on the Friday I got my MRI done so the whole thing was still very fresh and I hadn't come to terms with anything. Also they are one of my favorite bands ever.
  • My finals for my classes. Wednesday was the last day of lectures. Obviously was not able to take any of my finals. I'm going to get that done sometime before October 1.
  • My trip to Hawaii and to see my friends out there.
  • My first trip ever to Korea. I was supposed to go see the motherland and meet my relatives.
  • An interpreting/translating internship at Inje University in Busan, South Korea.
  • My video project is cancelled. I'll just have to try it again next year.
However, I was able to do things I would've otherwise missed out on. I got to go to my roommate's and a couple friends' weddings. I'll be home to see one of my closest friends come home from his mission who I haven't seen in four years. I've had ample opportunity to learn lessons all over the place. I feel like I've learned a lot about people. I'm also realizing many things about myself. Oh and I'm seeing someone awesome.

The first half of this year was hard, maybe the hardest 6 months of my life so far. Between the problems I had been dealing with earlier this year and getting GBS, it's been a rough year. This summer will also be a memorable one as I'm limited by my yet to recover eyes. No doubt 2012 is going to be a year to remember.
